Clonakilty |
Clonakilty is a small thriving town in the heart land of West Cork, it is steadily growing in population over recent years and has become the fastest growing town in County Cork. The town is a big tourist attraction and there is a wide range of shops, hotels, B&B's, Bars and restaurants.
The town is situated 40 minutes from Cork airport and 45 minutes from Cork City. The town is also situated 10 minutes from some of Irelands most beautiful blue flag beaches, especially the wonderful Inchydoney. Clonakilty is a link to a lot of the other major west Cork towns including Bandon, Skibbereen and Dunmanway. The streets of Clonakilty are aligned beautifully with color in the shop fronts, the old style design pavements which add to the historical effect.
Clonakilty is most notable for it's famous black pudding and the towns reputation for good quality cuisine. Clonakilty is a proud town and cherishes it's reputation, in most recent years the town was awarded the National Tidy Towns overall winner, European Entente Florale award and the International Nations in Bloom Gold Medal. Historical places include the birthplace of Michael Collins, he was General of the Free State Army, there is a memorial in place for him at Sam's Cross.
Clonakilty famous black pudding, comes from the famous butcher Edward Twomey in the middle of the town on Pearse Street. Edward Twomey bought the butcher from Harrington family, and say to this day that the clonakilty black pudding is manufactured to the original Harrington recipe prepared in 1880, an Irish tradition which they take pride in continuing to this day. Clonakilty pudding white & black received gold and bronze in the great tastes awards in 1999, in the sausage category in London.
